Small Business Mentoring is seeking dedicated and socially minded Independent Officers/Governance Board Members from across New Zealand.
Our goal is to have one representative from each of the sixteen regions, ensuring strong local insight and community connection.
This is a meaningful volunteer opportunity for someone who wants to give back, support local enterprise, and help shape a growing not‑for‑profit organisation that empowers individuals, families, and small businesses throughout the motu.
About Us
Small Business Mentoring, based in Whanganui (a UNESCO City of Design), provides personalised one‑on‑one business and financial mentoring services. We support individuals and families to set actionable goals, overcome challenges, and achieve measurable growth in both their personal and professional lives.
We work across a wide range of sectors including construction, education, financial services, hospitality, professional services, and social enterprises.
Our charitable registration is currently pending, and successful applicants will be formally appointed and listed on the Charities Services register once approved.
Role Overview
As a Governance Board Member, you will help guide the strategic direction, integrity, and long‑term sustainability of Small Business Mentoring. You will contribute your expertise to ensure we remain compliant, community‑focused, and mission‑driven.
This role includes:
Monthly board meetings (online or in person)
Occasional sub‑committee or project work
Providing governance oversight and strategic advice
Acting as an ambassador for our mission in your region
Key Responsibilities
Develop and review organisational policies
Oversee procedures, planning, and forecasting
Evaluate the impact of our services within your region
Ensure compliance with all legal and ethical standards under the Charities Act 2005
Support recruitment, selection, and training of volunteers and future staff
Contribute to strategic planning and organisational growth
Engage with local authorities, community groups, and government agencies
What We’re Looking For
Experience in governance, risk management, or strategic planning
Understanding of finance, budgeting, or compliance
Knowledge of mentoring, coaching, or business development
Strong communication, interpersonal, and decision‑making skills
Familiarity with small business or not‑for‑profit operations
A commitment to contributing 3–5 hours per month
A socially empathetic mindset and connection to your local community
Important Note on Conflicts of Interest
Under the Charities Act 2005, independent officers must always act in the best interests of the charity. Applicants must understand their responsibilities regarding actual, potential, or perceived conflicts of interest—both financial and non‑financial.
